T.A.A.M Conference

The Taiwo Afolabi Annual Maritime Conference (TAAM) is the brainchild of the Maritime Forum of the Law department, University of Lagos and is organised in honour of Barr. (Dr.) Taiwo Afolabi (MON), Group Executive Vice Chairman, SIFAX Group. It is aimed at promoting the knowledge of the maritime industry as a viable tool for economic development among undergraduates in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa. It also seeks to bridge the gap between the maritime students and industry experts.

The conference brings together over one thousand students drawn from different faculties such as Law, Education, Marine/Maritime, Economics, Accounting from various tertiary institutions across the country. Dignitaries consisting experts from the maritime industry, academic, business, consulting and relevant stakeholders are always present at the occasion too.

Maritime Blueprint Competition

The Maritime Blueprint Competition is a key part of the TAAM Conference. The Blueprint Competition is held a day before the main conference.

The aim of the competition is to deepen the knowledge of students on topical issues in the maritime sector. The competition provides students with the opportunity to highlight solutions to challenges rocking the country’s maritime sector. Judges from the competition are drawn from the academia and professionals.  Students from all tertiary institutions in Nigeria are invited to participate in this conference.

The competition is to deepen the knowledge base of law students across Nigeria, and to stimulate their interest in the country’s maritime industry. SIFAX Group, sponsors of the competition identified the need to have more maritime lawyers or students embracing the practice of marine law.

Since its inception, The University of Lagos, Bowen University, Obafemi Awolowo University have emerged winners.


Dr. Taiwo Afolabi

Barr. (Dr.) Taiwo Olayinka Afolabi (MON), is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of SIFAX Group. He was born in Ondo to the family of Chief & chief (Mrs.) Samson Afolabi.

He began his professional career with a shipping company, Nigerian Express Agencies Limited, where he distinguished himself and rose to become the Head of Operations. With the zeal of entrepreneurship burning in him, he left the company in 1988 to establish what has now turned to a big conglomerate, SIFAX Group.

Maritime Forum

The Maritime Forum, Faculty of Law, University of Lagos is a student association established by a committee of 7 law students, headed by Adeniyi Balogun in 2015 for the purpose of engaging students who aspire to develop a career in the maritime industry through organizing seminars, workshops, conferences, bi-weekly meetings, internship programs, competitions, network and discuss on contemporary issues in the maritime industry and the world at large.

The association is the convener of the Taiwo Afolabi Annual Maritime Conference, which holds annually at the University of Lagos.
